Madame Bong is from Gwangju, in the province of Jeollanam-do in South Korea: it is an important region for Korean cuisine. “Jeollanam-do is the Korean equivalent of Provence, France, or Naples, Italy.” (businesstimes.com) She learned to cook from her family, but also began training with chefs in commercial kitchens at a young age.

Madame Bong married a trained chef in the early 70’s and their family moved to Montreal in 1988 to open the first Korean restaurant in town. “Korea House” opened its doors on Queen Mary in 1989. They served the Korean community with home-cooked style cuisine reminiscing them of their homeland. We also had the joy of welcoming and serving some very famous Korean actors and prominent politicians.

Madame Bong a mariée un cuisinier dans les années 70. Leur famille a déménagé à Montréal en 1988 pour ouvrir le premier restaurant coréen en ville. Les portes de la “Maison Corée” ouvrent sur la rue Queen Mary en 1989. Nous avons servi la communauté coréenne avec des plats qui les transportaient à leur pays natal. Nous avons aussi eu le plaisir de recevoir des acteurs et politiciens de la corée.

After being in business for 15 years, they sold it to retire, but alas Madame Bong could not stay away from the kitchen for too long. She opened Chez Bong on St-Laurent in 2003 and it wasn’t long before the locals found this little ‘hole in the wall.’ The business boomed within the first 3 years and soon her daughters and sons quit their respective jobs to come help Madame Bong.

Après 15 ans en affaires, ils ont vendu le restaurant pour la retraite, mais (mal)heureusement Madame Bong ne pouvait pas être loin de la cuisine pour trop longtemps. Elle a donc ouvert Chez Bong sur St-Laurent en 2003 et bientôt les résidents ont découvert cet ‘hole in the wall.’ Le commerce a prospéré durant les trois premières années et c’est pas longtemps après que Madame Bong embauche ses enfants pour venir l’aider.
